About Doll Lank, Founder of ROBSresource.com
Dorothy (Doll) Lank, owner of KLB Benefits Law Group, advises employers on the application of ERISA’s tax qualification rules and Prohibited Transactions rules to qualified retirement plans, 403(b) plans and Individual Retirement Accounts (IRAs). Since 2015, she has developed particular expertise in Rollover Business Startup (ROBS) plans, which are invested in qualifying employer securities of the plan sponsor. Before focusing on ERISA, Doll’s practice covered general business law, including entity formation, mergers & acquisitions, nonprofit law and real estate.
As an ERISA attorney who’s advised hundreds of ROBS companies and owners, I’ve seen firsthand how frustrating ROBS arrangements can be, with so much responsibility resting on your shoulders and so little information out there to help you understand it. Sure, ROBS financing provides meaningful tax savings, but what are you supposed to do after the funding is accomplished?
I created ROBSresource.com to provide a broad range of basic information to ROBS owners, in a form that’s manageable to absorb, with no distracting ads. From a Quick-Start Guide about plan compliance to lucrative tax planning opportunities, ROBSresource.com covers all of it. The tax tips and compliance knowledge will not only help you grow your business, but will help you avoid costly mistakes.
I am an independent and experienced legal expert on retirement plan compliance and related corporate issues for ROBS owners. I am also a ROBS owner myself, so I really get what it’s like to be a ROBS owner and run a plan-owned company.
The site covers 6 main threads of content for ROBS owners to browse at their convenience:
Life Cycle of a ROBS Plan – basic info about sponsoring a ROBS retirement plan
Exit Strategies & Tax Planning – getting out of the ROBS funding, and maximizing tax savings
Life Events & Co-Ownership – protecting the company from the financial impact of the unexpected
C Corporation Rules & Selling the Company – running a C corporation and keeping good records
Fiduciary Rules & Prohibited Transactions – understand and avoid expensive mistakes arising from conflicts of interest
Interacting with the IRS & Department of Labor – what to expect from an IRS audit and a DOL investigation
Each thread has many short and clearly written articles, plus worksheets for you to get a handle on your particular plan and think through your own situation at your leisure. Learn the industry jargon and figure out why your plan provider keeps asking you for employee data. Is a Roth conversion of stock a good idea? How can you and your co-owner handle business disputes? How would a company sale work out for you? What is the IRS asking you to do in that notice you received?
The site features a comprehensive Glossary of Terms. You will also find interviews on specific topics with trusted industry experts like a CPA that services ROBS corporations, Third-Party Administrators, an investment advisor, a corporate attorney, and a business appraiser.
What’s your strategy to survive and thrive? Gain insights into all of this and more with a subscription to ROBSresource.com.
